Chase the Sun
Although relatively new to the Denver music scene, Smoke & Honey’s fresh acoustic sound and rich harmonies have music fans perking up their ears. Led by singer-songwriter Sarah Brown and accompanied by guitarist Andrés Diaz, the folk-pop duo draws you into their stories like friends sitting around a campfire. The group’s debut album ‘Chase the Sun’, set for release June 4th, is a hauntingly beautiful compilation about accepting loss and finding hope. Brown and Diaz recorded eight original songs live at Mighty Fine Productions in Denver, CO accompanied by a talented crew of musicians; Charlie Mertens on upright bass, Adrienne Short on violin, and Michael Edwards on percussion. The live set-up allowed for warmth and energy to permeate the tracks similar to the chemistry of the group’s live shows. As Smoke & Honey’s main songwriter, Brown tackles several themes in her music. The album’s first track, ‘Stargazing’ is about growing up in the Midwest. It draws a balance between loving where you came from and acknowledging the ways that it pushed you to become something more. The pair’s co-write, Sing to Me, describes our interconnectedness as people who have experienced pain and how music is a way of transcending pain. ‘Nathan’s Song’ is a deeply personal piece about a sibling’s struggle with addiction. "It’s about not wanting to recognize what the person you love has become, especially in comparison to an idea of them that is happily contained within a glow of childhood" says Brown. Smoke & Honey shared their debut compilation on June 4th at Denver Syntax Physic Opera and embarked on a Midwest Tour in June where they were joined by heartfelt indie-folk artist, Young Readers.
