Post Hoc Ergo: Propter Hoc
Post Hoc… includes songs written over a span of 24 years. Starting with In A Rut (which was originally a punk song written in 1985 and eventually recorded on an 8 track digital recorder in Tsukuba, Japan in 1996), each song contains a unique history of their own. The songs In the Shade and Feet Don’t Fail Me Now were songs written in 1994, in Seoul, Korea. What’s Your New Pleasure was recorded in 1995 in Austin, Texas. John’s friends Charlie “Redd” Whittington played bass, and Erick Tatuaka played drums. The tune was originally released on a 5-song promotional ep in 1997 called “The Whole Nine Yards.” The songs Alive and Breaking the Power were recorded in San Antonio, Texas in 2005. The remainder of the tunes was recorded from 2010-2011 in Wylie, Texas, each under pretty hectic circumstances. The final song Spring was actually sung while John was holding his third child, who was under a year at the time. His cooing was left in the tracks. Sisyphus Stone was the final song, recorded in late April, 2011. The vocals on that tune were almost whispered into a Rode NT-1 mike. John played all of the instruments pretty clumsily and did all the vocals, some left out of tune. The entire theme of knowing one’s own mistakes and forging on is the overall theme of the CD.
