This collection of Christmas and holiday songs begins and ends with the biblical canticles always part of the Anglican service of Evensong. The first canticle, the Magnificat (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord) is sung by Mary in the Gospel of Luke when she learns she will bear the Son of God. The last canticle is the Nunc Dimittis (Depart in Peace), also from the Gospel of Luke, which closes the Evensong service. Both are by one of my favorite composers, John Rutter.
