    The in Crowd: Sixties Movers 'N' Shakers

    For many people, the Sixties was and remains the music decade an era when pop reflected the rapidly changing times and, in doing so, entered public consciousness. Yet, though pop was part of the fabric of everyday life by the end of the decade, largely due to the Beatles, certain styles of music had started off as almost exclusive. Certainly in early-Sixties Britain, black music and especially the blues was the province of a favoured few who guarded their musical 'treasure' jealously. All that changed, of course, when the Beatles covered songs like the Isley Brothers 'Twist And Shout' and the Marvelettes' 'Please Mr Postman'. Later white acts to follow suit included the Rolling Stones (Bob & Earl's 'Harlem Shuffle') and Rod Stewart (Sam Cooke's 'Twistin' The Night Away'). Mods, members of that sharp-suited youth cult beloved by the Who, were connoisseurs of danceable black music, and Dobie Gray's 'The 'In' Crowd' encapsulated their view in both its title and lyrics. There's something for everyone on this wide-ranging compilation, so dig in and find something sweet or savoury to suit your taste.
