Warren Hill's take on "One on One" may not pack the in-your-face punch of "Hey Jude" and "Roxanne" on his previous disc Shelter, but it reflects the growing sense of restraint in his playing on Life Thru Rose Colored Glasses. Hill has always been a friend to well-known pop hits, but that soon may become unnecessary. His own composing skills have grown to the point where every tune can be a hit single; indicative of his more subtle styles is the laid-back Brazilian flavored vocal tune "Why Did It Have to Be This Way?" where he expresses sincere emotion without raising his voice above a gentle plea and he keeps his horn in the background. There are still certain moments where Hill goes for a squeal effect at the top of a melodic climb, holding notes a bit longer than necessary on the otherwise cool and crisp "Where Life Leads You," for instance, but the extra notes he throws off the main melody show a level of imagination that easily compensates. He also wisely doesn't overuse his trademark horn doubling technique on tunes like "Don't Look Back," letting the melody itself dictate the pocket where it works most effectively. A slick pop balladeer ("It's Never Too Late" and "The First Kiss" beg for lyrics), Hill also finds a few moments for bandmates to show some traditional jazz chops, as pianist Werner Gierig shows on the irritable "Seven Year Itch."
